PDP Accuses Tribunal, Condemns Amaechi's Confirmation

PDP Against Confirmation Of Amaechi...

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned the confirmation of Rotimi Ameachi as minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

According to the party, the action of the All Progressive Congress (APC) senators during the confirmation plenary at the Senate was an indication that they were not sincere in the war against corruption, Channels TV reports.

Briefing newsmen on the resolutions of the PDP national caucus meeting, which ended close to midnight on Thursday, October 29, Olisa Metuh, the party’s spokesman, said there was serious cause for concern in the nation’s political environment, especially as it concerns the survival of the nation’s democracy.

According to him, the national caucus of the PDP carefully reviewed the political development in the nation’s polity.

Commenting on the walkout staged by PDP senators during the confirmation exercise, Metuh said it showed the party’s collective stand against corruption.

“We salute the courage and unity of purpose of our Senators, especially as demonstrated in the Senate chambers today in their collective stand against impunity and corruption in line with the wishes and aspirations of Nigerians,” he said.

The PDP also criticised the recent tribunal judgment on Rivers State governorship election, accusing the Department for State Services of interference.

Metuh said the party vowed to “vehemently resist” executive interfering on others arms of government using the security agencies.

“For emphasis, the PDP and Nigerians wonder why it was necessary to interfere with the composition of the Rivers State Governorship Tribunal and to harass resident electoral commissioner severally to the extent that the Tribunal itself was able to deliver a judgement within 24 hours in a case that had nearly 100 witnesses, 1,000 pieces of documentary evidences and nine written addresses, each not less than 40 pages.”

The PDP spokesman noted that the Nigerian people and the PDP were victims of the APC-led government.

Annoyed over attempts by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to rubbish its electoral victories by using the election tribunals, the national leadership of the PDP summoned an emergency meeting of the party’s national caucus.

The national leadership of the party held a crucial meeting last night. A source disclosed that the opposition party was meeting to strategise on how to counter the ruling party’s onslaught, especially in relation to the adjudication of election cases by the tribunals.
