Fire Razes Pipeline Timber Market In Benin...

An early morning inferno has reportedly razed sections of the `Pipeline Timber Market’ in Benin city, the Edo state capital, NAN reports.

According to an eyewitness who gave his name as Mr Precious Emmanuel, the inferno started around 3.am. He said it was the swift response of the fire service officials that saved sections of the market from razing down completely.

“We woke up to see that the market was on fire. We believe that the fire was caused by those boys who smoke Indian hemp in the market.

“The intervention of the state fire service saved the situation. They responded quickly to the distress call put across to them,’’ Emmanuel said.

Reacting to the incident, the chairman of the market, Mr Osaremen Monday, said the cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained. He lamented that timber and machines worth millions of naira were destroyed by the fire.

Monday urged the state government to help those whose shops were gutted as the market was their only source of livelihood.

Some of the traders whose shops were affected, Mr Emmanuel Nwadiwe and Mrs Josephine Okotoe said they lost N5 million worth of goods in the fire

Speaking also, Mr Frankly Agbolahor, the state’s Director of Fire Service described the incident as sad. He noted that it was the quick intervention of his men that saved parts of the market.

“When we got the distress call, our men immediately mobilised to the scene of the fire and put out the fire,” Agbolahor said.

Meanwhile, on Monday, January 4, there was also a fire outbreak at the Organiser and Red petrol stations located in Amunko, Nnewi Okpuno Nnewichi, Anambra state.
