Over 84 houses including shops, schools, police station and worship centres have been destroyed by a rainstorm in Dorowa village in Ropp district of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The destruction left several people homeless and some squatting with relatives within the locality pending the renovation of their houses.

Such thunderstorm is nothing new to the community. It has caused unquantifiable destruction in the village within the last five years, with the recent downpour having the most devastating effect on dwellers.

The affected schools will have to suspend academic activities pending when they get renovation assistance.

The residents said that the storm removed the roofs of buildings.

“It came with a rolling wind that moved around the community and picked the roofs of some house and then went away,” a resident said.

The Councillor representing Lobiring Ward, Ishaya Dung, described the situation as devastating, with some affected person squatting with friends in the community.

There have been predictions of such storms and likely flooding in some northern states, with residents of flood prone areas asked to relocate.

Dorowa village head, Davou Chollom, said that the downpour was not unusual or too heavy, but that it came with heavy whirlwind that lasted for few hours and left destruction in its trail.

The havoc caused by the rainstorm needs urgent attention from the Plateau State government as well as spirited individuals and organisations in order to ensure that those displayed can return to their various homes as early as possible while the pupils also have to return to the classrooms on time.
