Enugu police arraign three over stolen mace

THREE persons have been arraigned before a chief magistrate’s court, in Awgu, Enugu State, for allegedly breaking into the council’s secretariat and forcefully taking away the Mace, the official symbol of authority used by Awgu local government legislative arm.

Arraigned were Umuokeke Izunna Romeo, Okolo Olisa Solomon and Enekwechi Ray Onyimba.


They were charged for alleged “offence of conspiracy, breaking and entry, malicious damage and unlawful possession of some kits suspected to be that of the Force”.

According to prosecution, “the accused persons on 28th day of October, 2014 forcefully broke into the legislative councils of Awgu local Government Area and stealing the Mace as well as causing damage to other property in the legislative council. After allegedly committing the offence they took to their heels and were arrested by the police who intercepted them at Agbogugu junction following information received by the operatives at Agbogugu junction.

“Their vehicle was searched and the stolen Mace recovered.”

When the case came up for mention, no bail was granted while the accused persons were remanded at the Oji River prisons and case adjourned to November 7, 2014, for hearing of their bail application.

Awgu local government council had been embroiled in a crisis leading to the emergence of parallel legislative arms, each claiming to have suspended the other.
