2019: NLC Regains Control Of Labour Party, Gets Certificate

Ahead of 2019 general elections, the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has regained possession of documents and certificate of registration of the troubled Labour Party (LP) that has been engulfed in leadership tussle over the control of the soul of the party.
The NLC President Ayuda Wabba received the party’s documents from the former national chairman, Dan Nwanyanwu in Abuja on Thursday, July 30.

Nwanyanwu presided over the party as national chairman since it was registered by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the year 2002.

It was learnt that the party was formed for social democracy by the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress (TUC). The first and only governor elected on the platform of the party was Olusegun Mimiko before he defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Daily Independent reported that the party’s assets are still with erstwhile national secretary of the party, Abubakar Salam.

It was gathered that a seven-man caretaker committee which was headed by Salisu Muhammad, was set up by the party to find a lasting solution to the lingering crisis that had engulfed the party.

The peace committee term of reference was to recover the certificate of registration of the party, including taking inventory and reclaim all assets and liabilities belonging to the party.

Muhammad said that the party has lost focused as the key principles on which the party was formed were not being followed, adding that the membership strength of the party is about 2 million Nigerians.

He added that the committee members had to beg the former chairman before he agreed to return the party’s documents.

The committee chairman said: ” We wanted the end to justify the means so we became very adept in using time tested tools of wide consultations.

“Moral persuasions, leveraging the power of public opinion and labour diplomacy. The combination of these seemingly benign approaches culminated into retrieving the certificates from the former chairman.”

Meanwhile, NLC boss,Wabba said the idea behind the formation of the party was to foster social interest and democratic principles, adding that as the new drivers of the party, it will be revamped to enable it compete with other parties in the country.
