Five mobile police officers attached to the 7 PMF command in Sokoto state have been arrested over the alleged murder of a man, Yahaya Shehu.
Vanguard reports that Shehu was killed by the suspects at Teke community in the Sabon-Birni local government area of the state a month ago.
The arrested policemen allegedly tortured their victim to death, when they were on patrol along the Isa-Sabon-Birni road. The body of the deceased was reportedly found in a nearby bush the following morning.
Shehu and his friend Bashar Nahantsi were on their way to Teke Market in Sabon-Birni local government area from Shinkafi in neighbouring Zamfara, when they were arrested for an undisclosed offence by the mobile policemen.
Briefing journalists at the Sultan Abubakar III International Airport, Salisu Fagge, the commissioner of police in the state, confirmed the arrest of the suspects.
“It is true that the mobile police officers who were alleged to have killed the deceased had been arrested by the command. They are now being detained at the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigations.
“I am assuring the family of the deceased that nobody is above the law and the affected police officers will be charged to court. They will be duly prosecuted if found guilty,” he said.
Unfortunately, police brutality is a common occurrence in Nigeria. Recently, 6 police officers have been arrested at the Force Criminal Investigations Department Annex, Alagbon, Ikoyi, Lagos state, over the killing of 33-year-old Emmanuel Orimisan.
Three weeks ago, four policemen were arrested in Lagos after one of them shot at a couple in a tricycle for refusing to give a bribe. The woman died on the spot, while the husband was rushed in critical condition to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital.
