FCT Area Council Elections for chairmen and councillors

Current Situation — FCT Area Council Elections (Scheduled for **Saturday, 21 February 2026)

Some candidates from major parties (e.g., PDP) have withdrawn or stepped down from races, endorsing other candidates ahead of the polls — but this is not a cancellation of the entire election.

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections — for chairmen and councillors in the six area councils of Abuja — are still planned to go ahead as scheduled on 21 February 2026. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed preparations are in place, and security agencies have deployed personnel for a peaceful and credible poll.

Political Developments Around the Elections

Some candidates from major parties (e.g., PDP) have withdrawn or stepped down from races, endorsing other candidates ahead of the polls — but this is not a cancellation of the entire election.

Civil society groups have raised concerns about election processes or government directives around election day, but these criticisms are about the conduct of the elections, not an official cancellation.
