Albino killers sentenced to death in Tanzania

A court in Tanzania has sentenced four people to death for the murder of an albino woman who was killed so her hacked-off limbs could be used in magic, officials said Friday.

The sentencing comes after Tanzania' President Jakaya Kikwete blasted the wave of killings of albinos, whose body parts are used for witchcraft, as a "disgusting and big embarrassment for the nation". 


The killers who were convicted include Charles Nassoro, the husband of the murdered woman.

'Boko Haram' kills dozens in raid on Nigerian village

Suspected Boko Haram militants have killed at least 45 people in a village in Borno state, north-east Nigeria, witnesses have said.

The gunmen who stormed Njaba targeted men and boys before setting the village on fire, survivors added.

The raid happened early on Tuesday but was not reported immediately because of the remoteness of the area.

1000 PDP Members Change Party

Over 1000 members of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Igueben local government area of Edo state defected to the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) on Thursday, March 5.
A former Local Government Transition Committee chairman Tom Adodo has also defected from the PDP to the APC, Premium Times reports.

All the former PDP members declared support for the APC administration of Adams Oshiomhole.

Flour Mills of Nigeria to cut capex as economy falters

Flour Mills of Nigeria expects to cut capital expenditure by almost half this year, down from 40 billion naira a year ago, as the slowdown in the economy, caused by the oil price collapse and the weakening naira, hurts consumer spending.

Chairman John Coumantaros told Reuters Africa Investment Summit that Flour Mills had spent around $750 million over the past 3-5 years to build capacity but would expected to spend around 19 billion naira ($95.53 million) this year, from cash flows and development loans.

A year ago, Flour Mills had planned to invest $1 billion over the next 3-5 years to fund growth and expand into West Africa.

Police fire shots at protesting UTME candidates

Hundreds of candidates wishing to sit for Monday’sUnified Tertiary Matriculation Examination escaped death in Jos after they were fired at by policemen called to maintain law and order.

This happened on Wednesday after they went berserk following the inability of the authorities to release examination slips to them.

The candidates had gathered at the Murtala Mohammed Way office of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board following announcements that they should come for the details of their examination centres.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Thursday said Nigeria’s   peculiar   challenges   required leaders with requisite experience to tackle them. 
He told guests inside the auditorium of his Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, Abeokuta, during the celebration of his 78th birthday and 2015 annual summit, that there were too many ‘think-tanks’ in the country instead of ‘do-tanks.’

Falana takes over suit seeking Mbu’s removal

A Federal High Court in Lagos on Thursday ordered the service of court papers on the Police Service Commission in Abuja in a suit seeking declaration that an Assistant Inspector General of Police, Mr. Joseph Mbu, is unfit to remain a police officer of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The ex parte application for leave of court to serve the PSC outside of jurisdiction was brought before Justice Ibrahim Buba by a Lagos-based lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN).

Falana had on Thursday appeared in court and announced appearance as counsel representing the plaintiff, a lawyer, Mr. Tope Alabi, who filed the case.

Breaking News... Boko Haram fighters mass in Gwoza, several residents killed

Boko Haram militants have been amassing in the northeast Nigeria town of Gwoza, believed to be the group's headquarters, killing residents who were unable to flee, a senator and witnesses said Thursday.

A female resident who fled Gwoza on Tuesday and requested anonymity said the insurgents rounded up elderly men who were studying the Koran outside the home of a local cleric.

The men were later executed in front of their wives, the witness told AFP from Yola, capital of neighbouring Adamawa state.

74 men, 20 children killed for refusing to join Boko Haram

The Islamic sect, Boko Haram, yesterday, slaughtered 74 men and 20 children at Njaba Village in Damboa Local Government Area of Borno State for refusing to join the insurgents.

Chibok girls still alive – Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan, yesterday, assured parents of the abducted Chibok girls and all Nigerians that the girls were still alive and his government was doing everything possible to rescue them.

The President spoke during a live discussion programme, Kaakaki, on African Independent Television (AIT), monitored in Abuja. PDP not against use of Card Reader – Secondus

Peoples Democratic Party, PDP yesterday said it was not against the use of electronic card reader by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, saying it was only against using them without a trial run.

Speaking to newsmen in Abuja yesterday, the Deputy National Chairman of the party, Prince Uche Secondus noted that it was imperative for the machines to be tested and not to be used as guinea pig as that would disenfranchise many eligible voters across the country.

Senate queries N1.275b security vote for Defence Ministry

The Senate Committee on Defence and Army, yesterday, demanded how the over N1.275 billion budgeted to the Ministry of Defence in the 2014 fiscal year was spent.
