APC has relegated D once-powerful PDP

The APC has made historic gains by relegating the once-powerful PDP party. The PDP failed to get a national spread of votes, doing well only in the south-east and the oil-rich Niger Delta. Most states in the north went to the APC, along with Nigeria's commercial hub, Lagos, in the south-west.

Nigeria's APC win landslide over PDP in state polls

The All Progressives Congress (APC) won 19 of the 28 governor posts in results declared from Saturday's elections.

It is the biggest defeat for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) since military ruled ended in 1999.

It lost the presidential poll last month for the first time.

APC leader Muhammadu Buhari will be inaugurated on 29 May, after he defeated President Goodluck Jonathan.

The PDP's decline has been reinforced by results from Saturday's elections for governors and state assemblies, reports the BBC's Bashir Saad Abdullahi from the capital, Abuja.

President Goodluck Jonathan's People's Democratic Party (PDP) had controlled the federal and most state governments since the end of military rule in 1999 but has suffered sweeping losses in the ongoing election cycle.

Jonathan's loss to Buhari in the presidential vote two weeks ago was the first ever democratic change of power at the federal level since Nigeria gained independence from Britain in 1960.

Amaechi accuses policemen of collusion with electoral fraudsters


Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State, has alleged that the police in the state were planning on doctoring the number of persons arrested in Tai Local Government Area of the state during Saturday’s governorship and House of Assembly elections. 

Governor Amaechi in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. David Iyofor, said “information just reaching us indicates that the Police in Rivers State want to doctor the statements of about 110 persons arrested for electoral offences and crimes in Tai Local Government of Rivers State during Saturday’s governorship and House of Assembly elections.

Beware of those dumping PDP for APC, Umar cautions Buhari


Former Military Governor of Kaduna State, Colonel Abubakar Umar (retd) yesterday urged the President- elect, General Muhammadu Buhari, retd  to be mindful of those he described as mere fair weather friends as he takes over governance in May 29.

In a statement issued yesterday, Umar also urged Buhari  to  ignore what he described as the treacherous actions of those opportunists who were presently dumping the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP for the All Progressives Congress, APC barely two weeks after the Presidential election.

The former military also assured President Goodluck Jonathan  of his  unalloyed  loyalty and “steadfast” friendship  as he prepares to face life outside power.

Breaking News: Jonathan fires IGP Abba, appoints Arase

President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday sacked Mr. Suleiman Abba, as the Inspector-General of Police.

According to a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, the President has named a Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Solomon Arase, as Abba’s replacement in acting capacity.

No reason was given for the President’s decision to relieve Abba of his appointment.

Enugu gov result: APC vows to challenge it in tribunal


Leadership of the All Progressives Congress, APC, yesterday rejected the result of the governorship election held in the state on Saturday in which the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC declared the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, candidate, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, as the winner.
Addressing a press conference in Enugu, yesterday, shortly before the final result was released, state chairman of the party,   Dr. Ben Nwoye, the governorship candidate, Mr. Okey Ezea   and his running mate, Mrs. Juliet Ibekaku, unanimously vowed to challenge the result legally.
