85 Boko Haram hostages rescued

►Chadian troops have rescued around 85 Nigerians kidnapped by Boko Haram Islamists last weekend from fishing communities in Nigeria’s extreme northeast, security and human rights sources said Saturday.

►Nearly 100 young men and several women were snatched in a raid by insurgents late on Sunday and ferried across the border into Chad, witnesses said.

TUC faults NMA strike, begs FG to reconsider sack of doctors

Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, TUC, has implored the Federal Government to reverse its decision to sack the striking doctors, warning that the nation could not afford any calamity such sack might cause.

TUC in a statement by its President and Secretary-General, Bobboi Kaigama and Musa Lawal, respectively, said “while we understand the plight of the government in having to simultaneously contain both the threat of Boko Haram to national security and the challenge of the Ebola disease, we consider it very precarious for it to insist on sacking the doctors at this time.

Military didn’t rig for us — PDP

Ekiti State  chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has dismissed allegation by All Progressives Congress, APC, that the Federal Government deployed the military to the state during the June 21 governorship election to assist it in rigging the election in favour of its candidate, Mr. Ayo Fayose.

The party equally decried a statement credited to the state chairman of APC, Chief Jide Awe that APC was used as a guinea pig by the PDP-led Federal Government to ensure victory for  Fayose in the election.

The Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu on Sunday in Abuja said he never mentioned Dr Adadevor as the female doctor who was treated and discharged of Ebola virus as reported by some sections of the media.

Deductions from police personnel salaries not mismanage — IGP

► The Acting Inspector-General of Police, Mr Suleiman Abba, said, weekend, that deductions from personnel of the force’s salaries into the Police Mortgage Bank Plc were not being mismanaged.
Abba offered the explanation shortly after presenting the bank’s “Share Certificates” to some personnel of the force in Abuja.

► He said: “Nobody is tampering with the deductions; some say it was fraudulent, so many, many things. I urge every personnel to exhibit the spirit of discipline and loyalty to the force. It (mortgage bank) is a worthwhile venture.

Liberia gives experimental Ebola drug to 3 African doctors

Health care workers in Liberia have administered three doses of the rare, experimental drug ZMapp to three doctors suffering from Ebola, two medical workers in Monrovia told Reuters.

Liberia, the West African country with the highest death toll from the tropical virus at 413, received three doses of the rare serum in a special consignment last week.

FG defends action over Doctors' sack

►The Federal Government, weekend, defended its decision to sack 16,000 resident doctors across the country, saying the move was to allow the government appraise the training programme, even as the Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, Lagos State Branch, dismissed the action describing it as ‘ ahuge joke.’

►Meanwhile, the Chairman House Committee on Diaspora, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa has said the sack of the resident doctors by the Federal Government was ‘highly questionable’ on several fronts.
Reacting to the sack at a press conference in Lagos, the Minister of Health, Professor Onyebuchi Chukwu said there had been problems with the training which also informed the ongoing doctors’ strike.

Sack of 16,000 resident doctors insensitive, Dabiri-Erewa

In a press statement issued yesterday, in Lagos, Chairman House Committee on Diaspora, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa described the sack of over 16,000 Nigerian resident doctors by the Federal Government as ‘highly questionable’ on several fronts, adding that “chief amongst which is the present emergency medical situation currently plaguing our nation.”

Dabiri-Erewa noted that it is understandable that the Federal Government may have disagreements with the striking doctors, but opting to sack all resident doctors given the present predicament is unjustifiable, insensitive and inconsiderate.
