Bodies lay strewn on the streets of a key north-eastern Nigerian town following an assault by militant Islamists, officials have told the CHAT212.

The Boko Haram group attacked Baga town on Wednesday, after over-running a military base there on Saturday, they said.



Almost the entire town had been torched and the militants were now raiding nearby areas, they added.

MEND endorses Buhari, accuses President Jonathan of failing Nigeria

The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, MEND, on Tuesday threw its weight behind the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Muhammadu Buhari, at the same time, launching a scorching attack on President Goodluck Jonathan.

►In a three-page statement signed by a spokesperson, Jomo Gbomo, MEND said it endorsed and fully support Mr. Buhari, after careful consideration of the state of the nation.

Husband denies beating wife for greeting pastor

Masked gunmen burst into the Paris offices of a French satirical newspaper on Wednesday and killed 12 people, including top journalists and two police officers, before fleeing in a car. The gunmen were still at large at dusk, as an extensive police dragnet spread across a traumatized city, The New York Times reports.

Among the dead were four prominent cartoonists who have repeatedly lampooned Islamic terrorists and the Prophet Muhammad, leading to speculation that the attack on the newspaper, Charlie Hebdo, was the work of Islamic militants acting alone or in concert with extremist groups.

Some senior citizens are motor park touts – Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan on Wednesday condemned some politicians parading themselves as statesmen and senior citizens whereas, they are by their utterances, “ordinary politicians and motor park touts.”

He said such politicians could not be described as statesmen because of the big offices they occupied before but by virtue of what they brought to bear on the nation.

All registered voters must get their Permanent Voter Cards, President orders Jega

President Goodluck Jonathan has directed   the Independent National Electoral Commission Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, to ensure that all registered Nigerians got their Permanent Voter Cards before next month’s general elections.

Jonathan said after swearing-in the INEC national commissioner representing Oyo State, Prof. Akinola Salau, in Abuja on Wednesday that the nation could not afford to organise a general election where some people would be disenfranchised.

He said, “So the chairman of INEC, all Nigerians must get voter cards; we cannot conduct an election where some people will not have the rights to vote on election days.
