We raped journalist after collecting N1m ransom ─ Suspected kidnappers

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested two suspected kidnappers, Bashiru Raji and Christian Jacob, who confessed to have raped a journalist and also collected N1m to release her in one of their operations.

Chat212 learnt that the suspected kidnappers were arrested by operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad on August 16 in the Egbeda area of Lagos. The police said the time of arrest was about 10am.

OAU bars students from Ebola-ravaged countries

FG deploys more troops in Adamawa… as B’Haram seizes two villages

Residents of   two Bura villages in   Hawul Local Government Area of Borno State now live in fear after   Boko Haram insurgents struck   and ordered non-Muslims to convert to Islam within 24 hours.

BREAKING NEWS: Secondary school principals reject new resumption date

The All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools on Thursday rejected the September 22 resumption date announced by the Federal Government.

In a telephone interview with our correspondent, the National Secretary of ANCONPPS, Mr. Kevin Nwankwo, said there was no evidence of any preventive measures already taken by the states to curb the spread of the Ebola Virus Disease, hence he asked the Federal Government to rescind its decision on the announced date.

Govt needs N200bn to compensate Abuja natives

►MINISTER of the Federal Capital Territory Administration, FCTA, Senator Bala Mohammed, disclosed yesterday that at least N200 billion would be required to adequately compensate natives of Abuja whose lands, crops and heritage were acquired  for the development of the city.

►Mohammed, who spoke while hosting participants of the National Defence College, Course 23, 2014 as part of their study tour, explained that the villages to be compensated and resettled occupied an area of 250 square kilometers of the Federal Capital City, Abuja.

FG needs N26.9trn to provide infrastructure in 5 years

The Minister of National Planning Commission (NPC), Dr Abubakar Sulaiman, said on Thursday that N26.9 trillion would be required between 2014 and 2018 to implement the National Integrated Infrastructure Master Plan (NIIMP).

Suleiman, who disclosed this at a news conference in Abuja, said the plan is aimed at delivering quality infrastructure across different sectors, including energy, transport, housing, water and agriculture.

Institute to release new wheat varieties in December

The Lake Chad Research Institute in Maiduguri says it will release two new wheat varieties that can yield six tonnes of wheat per hectare in December.

Dr Oluwasina Olabanji, the Executive Director of the institute, stated this in an interview in Abuja on Wednesday.
Olabanji said the tropical varieties are “Norman Borlaug” and “Reyna-28” which had undergone testing.

►Concerned Human Rights Nigeria, led by Declan Ihekaire, has risen against the recent re-introduction of ATM withdrawal charge of N65.00 by the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, under the new governor, Mr. Godwin Emefiele.

►Speaking at a press conference, Wednesday, Ihekhaire said there was no reason for the re-introduction of the ATM withdrawal charge, which was N100 under former CBN governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, and later abolished by him, and now N65.00 under Emefiele.

Boko Haram: Additional 500 troops deployed to North East

The Federal Government, yesterday, confirmed that about 500 troops  had been deployed to the North East to contain insurgency in Adamawa, Yobe and Borno states.
Coordinator of National Information Centre, Mr. Mike Omeri, gave the confirmation while briefing newsmen in Abuja on the current security situation in the country.

It will be recalled that on September 6, Boko Haram claimed to have taken over Gulak, the headquarters of Madagali Local Government Area in Adamawa State and displaced scores of people.

Lagos schools may not reopen Sept 22 - Fashola

Despite the Federal Government’s insistence   on September 22 resumption date for schools, indications emerged yesterday, that Lagos State Government might not respect the date.
