Kano Boko Haram gunmen massacred residents who tried to jump into Lake Chad seeking safety and burnt others alive after overpowering soldiers in a weekend attack in the restive region, a witness said Monday.

The military and a local official in Niger had previously confirmed the April 25 raid by the Islamists on Lake Chad's Karamga island.

APC accuses Jonathan of ‘last-minute dubious activities’

The All Progressives Congress has threatened to probe the outgoing administration of President Goodluck Jonathan over some “last-minute dubious activities” ahead of the May 29 handover.

The party alleged that the outgoing administration had been looting the nation’s resources, hurriedly recruiting into the public service and privatisatising key financial institutions.

The APC, in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, on Sunday, said such actions would have serious repercussions after May 29.

Buhari Not Interested In Appointing Sports Minister

A report on Daily Independent suggests that President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari will not appoint a minister to head Nigeria’s sports ministry.

Sources close to the Daura-born retired general said the new government is not keen on appointing anyone to oversee the affairs of the ministry, preferring instead to allow the Director General of National Sports Commission (NSC) to relate directly with the presidency.

BREAKING: Ondo Deputy Governor Impeached, Mimiko Appoints Replacement

The Ondo state House of Assembly on Monday morning impeached the deputy governor, Alhaji Ali Olanusi.

Monday’s plenary session was attended by 24 out of the 26 members of the House, including the Speaker, all in support of the impeachment, Channels TV reports.

The impeachment motion was moved by the majority leader, Henry Akinsoyinu, who revealed that the seven impeachable offences of gross misconduct and abuse of office levelled against the deputy governor have been proved.

Zulu King, Goodwill Zwelithini, has urged foreign nationals residing in rural areas to produce relevant documents to prove they are in the country legally.

Boko Haram attacks Plateau village, kills 4

Gunmen, suspected to be Boko Haram members, weekend, attacked Shonong village in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State, killing four people, including two members of the state-owned security outfit, Operation Rainbow.

The village had been attacked severally by people suspected to be Fulani herdsmen in the last three months and casualties are mostly women and children.

Niger army fights Boko Haram for Lake Chad island after attack

Niger's army is fighting to recapture an island in Lake Chad after it was seized by hundreds of Boko Haram militants aboard motorized canoes, army sources said on Sunday.

Boko Haram, hardline Islamists who want to establish a caliphate in the region, attacked the island of Karamga at dawn on Saturday, their second attempt to capture it since February, army and government sources said.

Lake Chad's islands, which lie in dense swampland, are an ideal base for mounting surprise attacks on the countries bordering the lake: Chad, Cameroon, Niger and Nigeria.
