Owie faults Jega on deployment of soldiers for polls

Former Chief Whip of the Senate, Senator Rowland Owie, yesterday, disagreed with the Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Prof. Attahiru Jega, over his comment that the Army was not empowered to monitor the forthcoming general elections.
He expressed fears that members of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, who will serve as ad-hoc staff of INEC during the elections and even voters may suffer if the Army was not on hand to provide adequate security, adding that the comments made by the INEC boss indicated that he does not care about the lives of his staff.

Switzerland to return N75.2bn Abacha loot to Nigeria

Swiss officials have said the $380m siphoned off by the family of the late Head of State, Gen. Sani Abacha, and confiscated by the Geneva authorities, will be returned to Nigeria. The amount is about N75.2bn at N198/dollar interbank rate.

The file on the matter, opened since 1999, would be closed, the officials said in a statement on the website of the Geneva public prosecutor’s office.

According to the office, the move comes now that Nigeria and the Abacha family have struck a deal.

2,123 policemen protected Jonathan while robbers raided bank – Fashola

The Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola, on Tuesday said 2, 123 policemen that would have helped to repel the Thursday bank robbery in the state were sent to protect President Goodluck Jonathan when he visited Lagos.

Fashola, who said this at the 2015 Agric Value Chains Empowerment programme, lamented that the President’s visit to the state paralysed the state security apparatus so much that it could not foil the robbery.

He said nearly all the vehicles bought by the state government for the police to be able to respond rapidly to crimes were on the alert for the President.

Elections may not hold in liberated towns, villages

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Kenneth Minimah, on Tuesday hinted that elections may not hold in North-East communities recently liberated from Boko Haram insurgents.

Minimah told journalists after a Security Council meeting presided over by President Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja that government structures needed to be restored in the town and villages before issues about elections could be discussed.

The presidential election is billed for March 28 while governorship and National Assembly polls will take place on April 11.

Buhari: I will respect press freedom, uphold constitution

No sight of Chibok girls in liberated areas – COAS

Hope dimmed, yesterday, on the rescue of abducted Chibok girls from Boko Haram terrorists as the Chief of Army Staff, General Kenneth Minimah, declared that despite the liberation of some towns and villages in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe States, the troops have not been able to establish the whereabouts of the schoolgirls.
