IN MAIDUGURI, Nigeria (AP) — Nigerian government soldiers, who witnesses said fled into neighboring Cameroon during a clash with a large number of Islamic fighters of Boko Haram, handed over their weapons to Cameroonian authorities and were on their way back to Nigeria, the Nigerian defense headquarters said.

NO fewer than 480 Nigerian soldiers have fled into Cameroon following fierce fighting with Boko Haram insurgents.

The Cameroonian Army Spokesman, Lt Col Didier Badjek, who confirmed this, said the troops had already been disarmed.

26-year Old Man Crushed to Death During Falconets Match

A carcrushed to death a 26-year-old boy at a popular viewing centre along Sani Abacha Road in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State capital, while he and several others were watching the Super Falconets of Nigeria and Germany Under-20  Female World Cup final in the early hours of yesterday.

The incident, which occurred at about 1.30 am triggered pandemonium at the bar some distance from NNPC filling station as fun seekers and those watching the match  scampered for safety.

Navy intercepts vessel laden with N28.8m illegally refined AGO

The Nigerian Navy Central Naval Command, CNC, yesterday intercepted a locally-made vessel, MV MERCY with suspected illegally refined Automated Gas Oil, AGO, worth N28.8 million.

It was learnt that the vessel, which was arrested by a naval patrol boat on the Furopa waterways in the Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State had seven suspected oil thieves on board.

Presbyterian Church institutes Fund on Chibok girls

►The Presbyterian Church of Nigeria has announced that in keeping with the Church’s spirit of Christian charity and in support of  President Goodluck Jonathan’s initiative in setting up a special Fund in aid of victims of Boko Haram insurgency and other social upheavals, the Church has set up a Fund toward the rehabilitation of the Chibok girls when they are eventually rescued.

►In a communiqué issued at the end of its biennial General Assembly meeting held in Calabar, Cross River State, the Church felt worried by the experiences the girls were passing through and the psychological trauma that could befall them when freed. The Fund would serve as the Church’s contribution toward rehabilitating the girls and making them to fulfill their divine destinies.

►Hundreds of troops in Gamboru Ngala and Banki towns reportedly fled their duty posts  into Cameroon, yesterday, after they ran short of ammunition in their encounter with Boko Haram terrorists who stormed the two communities with sophisticated weapons in search of security operatives.

►The Defence Headquarters, however, clarified immediately that the 480 Nigerian soldiers found on Cameroonian soil actually pursued fleeing Boko Haram terrorists past international boundaries of both countries against international law, hence they needed to surrender to Cameroonian authorities as required by law to show they were not on a hostile mission.
