300 Boko Haram kills in counter offensive: Nigeria military says

Cameroon/MAIDUGURI, Nigeria - Nigerian forces have killed more than 300 Boko Haram fighters during an operation to recapture 11 towns and villages since the start of the week, the military said on Wednesday, as regional neighbours also pounded the militants.

"Weapons and equipment were also captured and some destroyed," defence spokesman Major-General Chris Olukolade said in a statement. "However, two soldiers lost their lives while 10 others were wounded," he added.

VICTORIES -OVER BOKOHARAM

Nigerian soldiers recaptured the strategic town of Monguno, on the shores of Lake Chad where the four countries meet, from Boko Haram on Monday. More than 5,000 people fled the town after the insurgents seized it last month.


Olukolade said troops had seized five types of armoured fighting vehicles, an anti-aircraft gun, 50 cases of bombs, eight different types of machine guns, some 50 cases of ammunition and 300 motorcycles the rebels use to launch attacks.

Jega Reveals How NSA Forced INEC To Cancel Polls, Gives Details On Card Readers

The chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof Attahiru Jega has said that his Commission was set for the Presidential and National Assembly elections on February 14, but the national security adviser, retired Colonel Dasuki Sambo, and the service chiefs forced them to be postponed to March and April.
Jega spoke when he appeared before the Senate to demonstrate the workings of the Permanent Voter Cards and Card Reader Machines. Jega said both electoral instruments are in accordance with the Electoral Laws.

Governor Sule Lamido of Jigawa State on Tuesday emerged from a meeting with President Goodluck Jonathan at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, giving an indication that the Peoples Democratic Party stakeholders would beg former President Olusegun Obasanjo who dumped the party on Monday.

Lamido, who is the North-West Coordinator of Goodluck/Sambo Presidential Campaign, told State House correspondents that Obasanjo remained the father of all.

He said Jonathan and all the state governors were creations of the former President.

More Than 300 Boko Haram Militants Killed In Monguno

The Nigerian military claimed February 18 that over 300 Boko Haram insurgents were killed in Monguno, Borno State.

Monguno was seized January 25 and recaptured earlier this week, together with Marte and other communities.

In this period African allies also claimed gains in the counter-terrorism operations. Cameroon said they had killed 80 terrorists and arrested 1,000. Niger said that 160 people with links to Boko Haram had been arrested since February 6.

36 dead as explosions rock Biu again

There was multiple bomb explosions in Biu, the biggest town in south of the troubled Borno State on Tuesday, a resident of the town, Ibrahim Isah, said on the telephone.

Though details of the explosions remain sketchy as the extent of damages and number of casualty could not be ascertained on Tuesday afternoon, Isah said the incident occurred at about noon.

He insisted that it was massive and might have led to huge loss of lives.

US Military To Assist In War Against Boko Haram

The commander of the United States Special Forces Operations in Africa, Maj Gen James Linder has said the United States military will provide communications equipment and intelligence to help African nations in the fight against Islamist terrorist group, Boko Haram.
Reuters reported on Tuesday that Linder explained that the gesture was part of the annual US-backed ‘Flintlock’ counter-terrorism exercises this year in Chad, adding that the US will provide the technology that would allow African partners to communicate through cell phones, radios as well as computers.

Poll shift: We’re in extra-time, says Buhari

The Senate on Tuesday summoned the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission,   Attahiru Jega, to appear before it on   Wednesday(today).

Jega is   expected to brief senators on INEC’s readiness   for the forthcoming March 28 and April 11  elections.

The senate, which resumed plenary   on Tuesday after a 33-day break, took the decision following a motion by its Leader, Victor Ndoma-Egba.

Suicide attacks kill 38 as Boko Haram threatens Nigeria vote

Two suicide attacks in northeast Nigeria killed at least 38 people Tuesday, less than six weeks from elections, as the leader of Boko Haram vowed to disrupt the vote.

The Islamist insurgency has already forced a delay in the polls, initially scheduled for February 14, and officials had voiced hope that a regional military offensive could contain the bloodshed before the new election day, March 28.

75.94% of total PVCs distributed – INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, yesterday, released details of the Permanent Voters Cards, PVCs collection rate, showing that 75.94% of registered voters across the country have taken delivery of the crucial voting material.

52,275,367 voters of the registered 68,833,476 voters, according to INEC’s computation, had collected the PVCs as at yesterday.

The details, however, showed a continuing disparity in the PVC collection rates with indications that collection of the PVCs were significantly higher in the North than in the South.
