Tinubu Signs Electricity Act 2023, to de-monopolise Nigerian electricity generation, Empowers

Tinubu Signs Electricity Act 2023, to de-monopolise Nigerian electricity generation, Empowers individual, States, Private Companies To Generate Power...

de-monopolise Nigerian electricity generation, transmission, and distribution of electricity at the national level.

This new law will empower states, companies, and individuals to generate, transmit and distribute electricity in the country.

The Nigerian President, Bola Tinubu, has signed the 2023 Electricity Act which is a replacement for the Electricity and Power Sector Reform Act of 2005 into a law.

The newly enacted law will de-monopolise Nigerian electricity generation, transmission, and distribution of electricity at the national level.

This new law will empower states, companies, and individuals to generate, transmit and distribute electricity in the country.

Recall that the Electricity Act 2023 was initially passed by lawmakers in July 2022 to allow the states to issue licences to private investors who can operate mini-grids and power plants within the state.

But the Act precludes interstate and transnational electricity distribution.

The Nigerian Energy Regulatory Commission (NERC) would be able to govern the energy industry within Nigeria under the Electricity Act 2023, without prejudice to the states' authority to pass laws, create electricity markets, and regulate those markets.

The Act specifies how NERC can delegate regulatory authority to state regulators once they are constituted. NERC will continue to regulate energy business conducted solely in those states until those states' electricity market regulations are passed.

For the time being, Lagos, Edo, and Kaduna states already have power market regulations in place and may begin regulating their markets. However, NERC will regulate in states where such regulations do not exist. NERC will continue to carry out cross-border rules, regulating generation and transmission across states.

The Act also empowers parliamentarians to carry out oversight tasks and exercise control over the NESI through the Senate and House Committees on Power. This is should be done regardless of any government Ministry's supervisory authority over government-owned firms or other entities engaged in the Nigerian energy supply industry.

Electricity generation licensees are required by NERC to meet renewable generation obligations. The Act requires electricity generating firms to either create power from renewable energy sources, purchase power generated from renewable energy, or purchase any instrument representing renewable energy generation.

The Electricity Act also mandates the imposition of renewable purchase obligations on distribution or supply licensees.

President Tinubu today announce the appointment of former Economic and Financial

Sources close to the presidency informed THE WHISTLER that Ribadu was picked ahead of two other candidates that were being considered for the top security job.

President Bola Tinubu will any moment from today announce his appointment of former Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) chairman, Nuhu Ribadu, as National Security Adviser (NSA).

As part of his efforts to fulfill his promise of delivering a “bold, no-nonsense crime prevention reform” to safeguard Nigerians, President Tinubu evaluated the three candidates for the NSA position before finally settling for Ribadu who is widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s experienced individuals in the field of security and law enforcement.

The two other candidates that were also considered are former Minister of Interior and ex-Chief of Army Staff, retired General Abdulrahman Bello Dambazau; and the current Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Ahmed Rufai Abubakar.

The NSA serves as the principal adviser to the President on security matters, responsible for coordinating various security agencies, providing intelligence assessments, and formulating policies to address the nation’s security challenges.

The NSA position requires a capable and experienced individual who can navigate complex security issues and provide effective counsel to the President and Tinubu, according to sources, was determined to pick an individual who can help to effectively address the pressing security challenges facing the nation.

While the appointment is yet to be officially confirmed, insiders told THE WHISTLER that President Tinubu holds Ribadu in high regard and values his expertise and dedication to public service. The selection of Ribadu, when announced, will count among the first few important appointments to be made by the newly sworn-in president

Your govt is temporal - Atiku tells Tinubu

Atiku Abubakar has expressed confidence that he will reclaim his alleged stolen mandate at the court.

He, therefore, referred to the President Bola Tinubu-led APC administration as a “temporary government”.

Atiku or Peter Obi who is taking over the so called Asiwaju “Temporary government”?? Both men need to decide who came 2nd position first before fighting for the Top position!

Same Atiku called Buhari administration temporary after 2019 election and Buhari has completed his term

Atiku Abubakar who addressed elected officials of the PDP during a stakeholders meeting held at the Government House Banquet Hall in Bauchi on Saturday, charged members of the National Assembly of the PDP not to be “rubber stamp members of the National Assembly”.

He added; “You are there to serve as a formidable opposition to this temporary administration.”

According to him, “Based on the results announced by the INEC and pending the determination of electoral challenges in the court, our members elect are not the majority in the National Assembly.

“So, for the time being, they have to prepare to work as an effective, constructive opposition while also preparing for possible roles of the majority party when the cases are resolved. A Government in waiting, so to speak.”

Atiku Abubakar stressed that, “In the recently concluded elections, our party campaigned on specific things, Nigerians are therefore expecting you to work on how to fulfil those campaign promises. That you are not among the INEC selected members is not an excuse not to perform, you must collectively work to put the temporary government on the right direction to serve Nigerians. Don’t be part of rubber stamp.”
