Serena Williams LOSES! History will not be made: Roberta Vinci crash out Serena of US Open semifinal

Serena Williams has lost her bid to win the calendar-year Grand Slam. 

Serena Williams lost in her semifinal match to Roberta Vinci of Italy on Friday afternoon 2-6, 6-4, 6-4
She was attempting to become the first woman since Steffi Graff to win the calendar-year Grand Slam
Serena had won her previous four Grand Slam tournaments - including all three this year - and her last 33 matches in majors

Serena was also attempting to match Graff's record of 22 Grand Slam singles titles, the most of any player in the Open Era
'I thought she played the best tennis in her career,' Williams said of Vinci after the match during her press conference - which lasted just three minutes
Vinci, who is unseeded, will now take on countrywoman and former roommate Flavia Pennetta in the final on Saturday


The top ranked American lost in her semifinal match to Roberta Vinci of Italy on Friday afternoon 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. She had won her previous four Grand Slam tournaments, including all three this year - the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon. Serena was attempting to become the first player since Steffi Graff in 1988 to win the calendar-year Grand Slam while also matching the German tennis star's 22 Grand Slam singles titles, the Open Era record. Vinci will now take on countrywoman Flavia Pennetta in the final, who upset Simona Halep earlier in the day
