Polls - 47% Of Nigerians Had Poor Power Supply In Q2 2013



Despite claims of improvement in power supply by the ministry of power, a series of power sector polls conducted by NOI Polls Ltd in the second quarter (Q2) of 2013 has revealed that an average of 47 per cent of Nigerian adults had poor electricity supply which went from bad to worse in some cases.

The results also showed that about 8 in 10 of those interviewed, representing 81 per cent of respondents, generate their own power supply through alternative sources to compensate for irregular power supply.

The polls further revealed that a combined average of 69 per cent of Nigerians have experienced increase in their spending on alternative power supply compared to a year ago.

The NOI power sector polls was introduced in April 2013 to monitor trends in the sector in order to ascertain the perceptions of Nigerians regarding the power sector reforms. The organisation is Nigeria’s leading opinion polling and research organisation, which works in technical partnership with the Gallup Organisation of the United States.

The polls monitor the hours of power supply received daily and expenditure on alternative sources of power compared to a year ago, and releases quarterly reports on findings of the polls, with this being the first of its result on the power sector.

A breakdown of the results showed that “22 per cent of Nigerians say power was very bad and turned worse, 25 per cent say it remained bad, 33 per cent of Nigerian adults saw some improvement in power supply while 20 per cent found that power remained the same with no difference in the past month.”
