The Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola, is proposing a massive deployment of professionals into Nigeria’s most challenged sectors if the nation wants to see the desired changes.

In an event held in Lagos on Tuesday to look at Nigeria’s past 100 and the next 100 years, as the country marks the centenary of the amalgamation of the northern and southern protectorates, Governor Fashola stressed the need for professionals to be in the law making arm of government, pointing out that Nigeria needs a paradigm shift.

The event was put together by a new online newspaper, ‘The Cable’.

Various speakers, including former military Head of State, General Adulsalami Abubakar, agreed that with a right mix of good government policy, a strong civil society and the political will, Nigeria could turn things around.

General Abubakar appealed to all politicians in Nigeria to always put Nigeria first and never to politicise the security challenges facing Nigeria.

Also lending his voice to the theme of the event “Nigeria At 100, Reflections On The Future”, the chairman, Mr John Momoh, wants to see a total overhaul of the country’s value system, which he says will strengthen its evolving growth.

“Nigeria is a combination of the good the bad and the ugly and so it is in so many nations in the world. It is the degree to which you put these different components that makes a nation great.

“In Nigeria we have had a lot of the good, we have quite a bit of the bad but we have a large measure of the ugly.

“Nigeria seems to be under siege by a few people who assume that politics is the road to stardom and the road to financial security. This has to change,” Mr Momoh said.
