Heated Debate In National Conference Over Alleged New Constitution

Delegates at the national conference engaged in a heated debate on Monday over media reports that the conference secretariat is lobbying northern delegates to adopt a new constitution.

Some of the delegates were insisting that the secretariat should explain its role in the matter, a position opposed by other delegates.

When the conference opened on Monday in the week billed to mark the end of considerations of committee reports with just three reports remaining, a delegate representing Nigeria Guild of Editors, Modibbo Kawu, raised a point of order over media reports that northern delegates were being lobbied to pass a new constitution.

He said that the deputy chairman of the conference, Professor Bolaji Akinyemi, was part of the persons pushing for the constitution.

Even though some delegates felt otherwise, Professor Akinyemi spoke on his role on the matter.

Professor Akinyemi told the delegates that his role was to get the groups talking before the issue on the new constitution was raised.

Other delegates, who were named in the media report, were called on to speak before the secretariat was absolved of any blame.

After the issue was settled, the conference began consideration of the Committee on Political Parties and Electoral Matters. The amendment consideration will be held on Tuesday when the conference reconvenes.
