Arsenal tell Wenger to spend big or leave
Arsene Wenger has been issued an ultimatum by the Arsenal board to launch a summer spending spree or face the sack – says The Sun. The bigwigs at the Emirates have reportedly become increasingly unhappy about the direction the Arsenal team is heading in and will remove Wenger from his post unless he splashes out on names like Toni Kroos, Gonzalo Higuain, Paul Pogba, Zlatan Ibrahimovic
Paper Round’s view: Arsenal are a frustrating club and Arsene Wenger’s lack of action in the transfer market is certainly a factor behind the Gunners’ inability to break out of their current rut… but the club’s reported cash reserves of £159 million won’t go far if Wenger genuinely is under pressure to bring in that absurd list of players. A club whose owners are in the business of making profit are hardly likely to suddenly change their policy completely and buy a group of the most expensive footballers in the world. And how on earth does Stones make that list? We’re talking about a centre-back who can’t even get into a shambolic Everton back-four at the moment. Talented he may be, but on the level of Pogba and Zlatan?
