How INEC'll check poll violence in 2015, by Jega

NATIONAL CHAIRMAN of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Attahiru Jega, yesterday, enumerated reasons elections are violence-prone and outlined the measures the commission has put in place to make the 2015 elections violence-free.

Optimistic that the elections will be peaceful, free and fair, Jega, who spoke at a public lecture organized by the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations in Lagos warned politicians to conduct themselves properly and desist from acts that could cause violence.

►LEADERS of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the South-West zone yesterday converged in Ibadan, alleging that the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, had brought more economic woes and frustrated genuine attempts by the progressive forces to bring hope to Nigerians.

►They said this at the first APC South West Assembly, with prominent chieftains of the party including governors of Oyo and Osun states, Senator Abiola Ajimobi and Governor Rauf Aregbesola, the National Vice-Chairman (South-West), Pius Akinyelure in attendance.

B'Haram: Femi Falani gives FG 7-day ultimatum to prosecute Sheriff

Lagos-based fiery lawyer, Femi Falani, has given the Federal Government seven days to prosecute the former Borno State Governor, Senator Ali Modu Sherriff, for allegedly sponsoring Boko Haram or face his wrath.

The human rights lawyer made it clear that he would personally apply for an order or mandamus for Sherriff and others to be investigated and be prosecuted after the expiration of the week-long ultimatum.

Boko Haram: Reputation of Nigeria’s military at stake, says US

The United States of America  warned yesterday that the reputation of Nigeria’s military was at stake while the future of the country and her children was in jeopardy following the capture of some towns in the north eastern part of the country in the last few weeks by Boko Haram terrorists.

This came as Chief of Defence Staff, Air Marshal Alex Badeh, revealed that for the country to win the war against terrorism, there was the need for diplomatic lobbying for foreign assistance in areas of equipment.

Vote out bad politicians, Fashola, others tell Nigerians

►AHEAD of the 2015 general elections, eminent Nigerians including Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos, former Nigerian ambassador to the United States, Ambassador  George Obiozor and renowned Professor of Law, Akin Oyebode, yesterday, in Lagos, called on Nigerians not to take their voting power for granted. They were also urged to vote out non-performing office holders or inept party in the forthcoming general elections.

►Presiding Bishop of The Redeemed Evangelical Mission, TREM, Dr. Mike Okonkwo, among others, spoke in the same vein, insisting that Nigerians must avail themselves of the opportunities provided by the general elections to make positive change towards the development of democracy  in the country.
