Obanikoro Reveals Why Soldiers Were Deployed To Osun

MINISTER  of State for Defence, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, yesterday said the deployment of armed security operatives, including soldiers to Osun State for Saturday’s governorship election was to prevent breakdown of law and order before, during and after the governorship election.

This came as the Acting Inspector General of Police, IGP, Suleiman Abba, warned politicians without legitimate business in the election to steer clear of the state during the elections.

►The Federal Government has confirmed the first case of Ebola Virus Disease in a Nigerian medical doctor, who was among the people that had the first contact with Mr. Patrick Sawyer, the deceased Liberian and first confirmed Ebola victim in the country.
►Late Sawyer, a consultant to the Liberian Finance Ministry was found to be infected with the virus when he arrived Lagos on July 20, 2014. He died in quarantine on July 25 and his body was later cremated.

►Director Defence Information, Major General Chris Olukolade, in response to allegations of war crimes against the military by Amnesty International, said in a statement: “Military authorities are deeply concerned about the set of video footage being circulated and which unfortunately has also become reference data for Amnesty International in its report.”

►Amnesty International, in its report, claimed to have “a fresh evidence of war crimes, including extrajudicial executions, and other serious human rights violations being carried out in North‑Eastern Nigeria as the fight by the military against Boko Haram and other armed groups intensifies.”

Days Politicians Could Manipulate Nigerian Elections Are Gone Forever — Jonathan

President Goodluck  Ebele Jonathan declared, Monday, in Washington DC that the days when a few politicians, acting in concert with their hirelings and thugs, can hijack voters cards and other electoral materials, and manipulate the outcome of elections to their personal advantage are gone forever in Nigeria.

Speaking at a meeting with Nigerian professionals in the United States, President Jonathan said that he remained fully committed to keeping the promise he made in 2011 that he will do everything possible to ensure that the elections in Nigeria become very free, fair and credible.
