2019 Elections: INEC begins training of staff

INEC begins preparations for 2019 general election


The Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, on Monday said the commission was poised to build a functional electoral system ahead of 2019 general elections.

Yakubu made the assertion at the opening of a two-day strategic workshop to review the implementation of the commission’s strategic plan for 2012-2016.

The chairman said that the workshop was part of the commission’s strategic plan toward successful general elections in 2019 and beyond.


He said, “The objective of this workshop is to retrospect and project in two days, and come up with better ideas and solutions.

“We need to re-strategise for the 2019 general elections and beyond to come up with practical solutions on how to strengthen the electoral process.

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State says he will lead a strong campaign to ensure victory for President Muhammadu Buhari and also for Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the All Progressives Congress governorship candidate in the state  in the 2019 general elections.

Ambode made the remark on Tuesday at the Presidential Wing of the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, shortly after he accompanied Buhari to perform the official inauguration of the new ECOWAS border posts at Seme-Krake joint border post in Badagry.

ABEOKUTA-Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun on Monday accused the National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress(APC), Adams Oshiomole of conniving with a cabal in Lagos to write a fake result which produced Dapo Abiodun as the party Governorship Candidate for 2019 election.

Nigeria will work closely with Benin Republic to ensure success of joint border facility

President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday in Seme pledged that Nigeria will work closely with the Republic of Benin to ensure the success of the newly inaugurated Seme-Krake joint border post between both countries.

Speaking at the official handing over ceremony of the joint border post, President Buhari described the project, aimed at enhancing the free movement of persons and goods in the region, as “a symbol of integration that brings together the peoples of Nigeria and Benin.”

Nigeria police force clashed with NHIS executive secretary

Officers of the Nigeria police force clashed with workers at the head office of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) in Abuja on Monday.

The policemen who escorted Usman Yusuf, NHIS executive secretary who was suspended last week, into his office, fired teargas at workers.

Yusuf had kicked against his suspension by the NHIS governing board, saying he would resume work on Monday.
