$1.69m fraud: Fred Ajudua seeks fresh bail

Former Lagos socialite, Fred Ajudua, who is facing different allegations of fraud before the Lagos High Court sitting in Ikeja has filed a fresh application for bail.

The application is pending before Justice Oluwatoyin Ipaye and is coming just over a week after another judge; Justice Kudirat Jose also of the Lagos High Court denied him bail.

Mr. Ajudua is facing a $1.69m fraud charge before Justice Jose while he is charged before Justice Ipaye on 14 counts of conspiracy and obtaining by false pretences.

He allegedly defrauded a former Chief of Army Staff, retired Lt.-Gen. Ishaya Bamaiyi, of $5.9m that’s about N1bn.

Mr. Ajudua was arraigned before Justice Ipaye on March 11 by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

At the proceedings on Tuesday, his counsel, Mr Olalekan Ojo, informed the court that the defendant’s bail application had been served to the EFCC since the 31st of March.

In the application, Mr Ojo urged the court to grant Fred Ajudua bail on liberal terms, adding that there is overwhelming medical evidence that he was suffering from a life-threatening ailment as his only surviving kidney is about to collapse.

The lawyer also submitted that medical facility at the Kirikiri Maximum Prison, where the defendant is remanded cannot adequately meet his medical needs.

In another application filed before the court, Mr Ojo is seeking permission for the extra judicial statements made by the defendant to be made part of the proof of evidence before the court.

Counsel to the EFCC, Mr Seidu Atteh, however told the court that he needed time to file replies to the two applications.

Justice Ipaye granted his request and adjourned the matter till May 9, for hearing of the defendant’s applications.
