Handing over the cheque to the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Kenneth Minimah, who was represented by Corps Commander of Nigerian Army Engineers, Maj.-Gen. John Davis, Governor Obiano commended the army engineers for completing 80 per cent of the project between that period and now.
He also thanked the Army for the quality of work done on the project and other projects within the state.
The governor pledged to partner with the Nigeria Army in reconstruction or construction of other road networks within Onitsha metropolis immediately after the rainy season.
According to him, the Nigerian Army Engineers Corps has proved that it was capable of constructing quality roads within record time.
Obiano, who also inspected the military hospital at the cantonment, pledged to assist in expanding the hospital and provide drugs and equipment.
“We are also planning to establish a quarantine centre within the cantonment since we have large space available here,” he said.
On the moribund cantonment water project, the governor said the state government, through the help of the World Bank, would resuscitate the project.
“We would make sure that the water reticulates beyond the cantonment for the benefit of communities close to the cantonment,” he assured.
Earlier, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Kenneth Minimah, thanked the governor for partnering with the Nigerian Army in the areas of road construction and internal security.
