Shippers’ Council, NAC Partner To Re-fleet Rickety Cargo Trucks

 The National Auto-motive Council (NAC) and the Nigerian Shipper Council (NSC) are set to re-fleet cargo carrying trucks and phase out the old and rickety ones currently in use at the ports.

In an exclusive interview with Chat212, the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers ’Council, Mr. Hassan Bello disclosed this at recently concluded members night of the Nigerian Chamber of Shipping saying that the reason behind the re-fleeting project was bring about standardization in the trucking sub-sector.

Bello said that the Council has opened discussions with the National Association of Transport Owners (NATO), Association Maritime Transport Owners (AMATO), Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) and other stakeholders in the maritime industry.

He explained that standardization of the trucking sub-sector of the maritime industry will not only decongest the port access roads, it will lead to improved Truck Transit Time at Ports.

Besides, the Council boss also disclosed that the entire project will include installment of Electronic Gating and Call System.

He said “We are trying to bring them together so that there will be a semblance standardization, a semblance of accountability and a semblance of responsibility.”

Confirming the development, President of the   Association Maritime Transport Owners (AMATO), Chief Remi Ogungbemi told Chat212 that a private investor is championing the re-fleeting project but with support from the Shippers’ Council.

Ogungbemi explained that the trucks will be given the operators on hire purchase and repaid back over a period of time.

He also said that these trucks will not be put to use until the truck park being constructed at the Trade fair Centre along the Lagos Badagry Express way is completed

He disclosed that the major constraintth slowing the down the   the movement of trucks into the park was construction of entry and exit points at the park adding that the use of the current entry point into the trade fair centre will create another problem for other motorists”.
