The Ogoni had repeatedly called on the various political parties to ensure they produced their standard bearer for the next governorship election from the area. This appeal to President Jonathan which came on the heels of the recent adoption of Dr Dakuku Peterside as consensus candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC in the state indicated that they were set to queue behind their son, Senator Lee Maeba if he emerges flag bearer of the PDP in the state.
President of MOSOP, Mr Pyagbara who said the Ogoni had been shortchanged in the APC with the emergence of Peterside as flag bearer in the open letter to Mr President stressed that the essence of their clamour for governor from the area was to satisfy their yearning for ethnic justice in the state.
According to him, they had not produced a governor, deputy governor, Chief Judge or Speaker for the state since its creation.
“the Ogoni quest for the governorship of Rivers state is rightly sustained within the framework of two variable, to promote ethnic justice and a sense of belonging in the Nigerian project. Ogoni is the only ethnic group that has not had the opportunity of producing a governor, deputy, Speaker or Chief judge in the state”, the statement said.
Senator Maeba who hails from Ogoni is among frontline governorship aspirants of the party from the area. With the quest for an Ogoni as governor they will certainly file behind their own if he wins the primaries of his party.
Recall that the Ogoni protested the decision of the APC which shut out their own in the party, Senator Magnus Abe from the governorship race.
