The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, yesterday, described as ungodly allegations by the Director General of All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Organisation, Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State that it offered N6 billion bribe to some pastors to help President Goodluck Jonathan win the presidential election.
PDP also raised an alarm that as part of moves to disenfranchise non-indigenes in Lagos, the APC was conniving with some staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to burn their Permanent Voter Cards, PVCs.
According to the party, the allegations amount to bringing religion into politics.
PDP, which spoke through its National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh, in Abuja, yesterday, urged the governor to go for confession as a Catholic for ridiculing respected and revered men of God.
The party said: “Pastors are revered people and to bring their character into disrepute is a sin before God. We do not think anybody, not to talk of somebody who is a Christian, can make such statement.
“We challenge the Director General of APC to name such pastors and where the money is coming from.
“This attack is capable of bringing Christians and Muslims into a major disagreement and major dispute. If truly the person who issued this statement is a Catholic as he said, we are asking him to go for confession.”
Speaking further on alleged burning of PVCs of non-indigenes in Lagos State by the APC, in collaboration with INEC, PDP said the anomaly had been reported to INEC, adding that in some states, the PVCs of non-indigenes were burnt.
It said: “This has never happened before, but we don’t know why the APC is doing such; may be because we have credible presidential candidate and may be because we have governorship candidate in Lagos State.
“We have the records and we are asking the non-indigenes involved that if by Friday, INEC still does not give them their PVCs, we shall take decisive action.
“We know that 90 per cent of these non-indigenes are supporters of PDP. This is part of the APC janjaweed ideology to truncate democracy.
“The APC has been saying they were on top of the election, but now that it is obvious that PDP is on top, that President Jonathan will win the election, they have resorted to causing mayhem.”
