A chieftain of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was allegedly found with 500 permanent voter cards (PVCs) at his residence in Benin, Edo state.
The discovery resulted in bloody clash between supporters of the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) and those of the PDP.
The incident began when the PDP chief was caught trying to use someone else’s ATM card to make a withdrawal at one of the new generation banks, and was detained by security personnel who later took him to the police.
According to Leadership, the policemen took him to his residence to search the place and when they got there, 500 PVCs were found in his room.
He supposedly confessed that the PVCs belonged to a House of Representatives candidate from Edo Central.
While the APC in the state asked that the suspect be transported immediately to the state Police Command in Benin City, some PDP members insisted that the suspect be let off the hook.
The news caused outrage among Nigerians.
One resident wondered: “I really believe in Jonathan but what exactly is wrong with the PDP?”
Others said that the INEC chairman must be sacked because of such incidents:
“You see why Jega should be sacked? The man cannot even supervise the distribution of registration cards. How do you think he will manage something as sensitive as ballots?”
“And that is the reason why Jega has introduced the use of card reader which the PDP is trying all they can to cancel to perfect their rigging plan,” he added.
It should be noted that the senatorial candidate of the APC in Edo state, Chief Francis Inegbeneki, recently accused the PDP of buying PVCs from elderly people.
The main electoral body, meanwhile, said recently that PVC distribution nationwide is at 76%.
