Last Sunday’s defection of the Rivers state deputy governor, Engineer Tele Ikuru, from the All Progressives Congress (APC), to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is believed by many political analysts and party supporters to be a move that will create a crack in the heart of the state chapter of the party.
The deputy governor’s defection is also believed to have set the stage for political readjustments in the state, even as no fewer than 18 members of the 24-man state executive council are set to dump the APC.
However, the Rivers state governor, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, in his reaction to his deputy’s defection on Tuesday took to his Twitter handle and berated Ikuru’s action in his tweet.
Amaechi, who is the chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, expressed optimism that Ikuru’s defection is not even enough to cause a storm in a tea cup, adding that the APC’s march to victory cannot be disrupted.
The governor revealed that he is feeling invigorated because change is near.

Ikuru, who was officially received into the state PDP on Monday in Port Harcourt, promised to bring along all his supporters.
Meanwhile, it is being speculated that some commissioners have concluded plans to decamp to the PDP, and that about 75 percent of the members of the state House of Assembly are gearing up to dump the APC.

A reliable source in the camp of the state PDP governorship candidate, Nyesom Wike, who spoke on condition of anonymity, revealed that five Amaechi commissioners attended a recent strategic meeting preparatory to their formal defection “just few days ahead.”
The political atmosphere in Rivers state is presently intense because the development is not just causing serious panic in the state but also at the national level of the party.
Most politicians who defect from one party to another act out of selfish interests, although they usually cite other motives to the press and the public.
Defection which is viewed by many politicians as a normal thing in the game of politics, is seriously abused at this time. Most Nigerian politicians deliberately refuse to consider the terms and conditions attached to defecting from one party to another.
Many decamp when they are unable to secure their party’s ticket to contest for an elective position, while others defect to a richer and bigger party that can splash money on leaders and supporters simply for the purpose of stomach infrastructure.
