Most Nigerians have called on Boko Haram victims to abort their pregnancies, saying that God will understand them.
Chat212 has asked Nigerians what more than 200 girls, who have unwanted pregnancies from Boko Haram fighters, should do. Check out below their answers to this sensitive question.
There was jubilation when reports reached us that the Nigerian army had rescued about 300 women and girls held by Boko Haram.
The senator from the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Borno state, Ali Ndume, put the number of freed at about 1000 people, adding that it shows that Boko Haram terrorism was not stage managed.
But sad news came from the United Nations Populations Fund (UNFPA), said that about 214 of the 687 women and girls so far rescued by the Nigerian Army are at various stages of pregnancy.
Some persons have called for the girls to abort the pregnancies. Others hold strong religious views and have said the girls should not.
Aisha Edo, a self-employed CEO from Makurdi, said: “This is a very sensitive issue. To me I think the girls should be kept in asylum for at least 2 years for them to have their babies and recover from the shock and trauma. These babies should be kept in a separate location away from their mothers. With this they will recover faster. Then the issue of the children, if you know what is called socialization, if these children are well trained to be good citizens of Nigeria, they won’t do what their fathers did. As a result, such a thing won’t repeat itself. Abortion is child abuse. Those kids have the rights to live, they never put themselves in those wombs so should not be hated before they will be born.”
Fola Ikumoluyi from Lagos states that abortion is not a solution: “I think abortion is not the solution, we should think about the innocent babies that know nothing about this Boko Haram, they a coming into their own world, sinless. Our government should please make education compulsory to a level that one can know and understand that his\her life belongs to him or she and no religion or any group can lead them astray.”
“If only one Shekau can hold Nigeria to ransom I wonder what 200 will do?” Kelechukwu Kennedy from Kaduna questioned.
Ola Akangbe added that government should help the girls: “If pregnancy can be terminated without endangering the victims without any other consideration let any one of them that want the abortion get enough support and care.”
“Aborting the pregnancy will only make them other sets of Boko Haram who kills for nothing. It will be better if they leave the pregnancy,” Yila Iliya Tugga, who is a student, said.
Chinedu Frank Mega hesitated: “Aborting the pregnancies is not advisable because of God Almighty but giving birth will be highly disastrous because they are going to be future Boko Haram both the males and females so i don’t know the best option here.”
“No to abortion! Let the government take full responsibility of the girls and their babies. The children when born can be adopted while their mothers are well rehabilitated,” lamented Ainasu Samuel, assistant director of education at Lagos state government.
Larger Knowles, who lives in Abuja, said: “They should abort the baby n that’s what’s up. The only remedy is abortion. All those religious nonsense don’t even move me. Abort the pregnancies.”
Ola Olubunmi Titus, a married man from Ado-Ekiti, noted that children can’t make good decisions: “The children should follow their heart. Which good decision can an 8 – 17yrs old girl make? Where, 30-somethiing years old make erroneous decision? I’m in support that the children should abort the pregnancy unless it is a health risk to them. They can also give it out to people who have had no children of theirs to adopt.”
“Imagine you hate a child before he is born. There is no point bringing him from the first place. I am for abortion!! Simple we have committed many offences to God. He will understand,” said Borno student Abdullahi Abubakar.
Clinton Ken added: “We should remember one day the truth behind all this issue of Boko Haram pregnantting two hundred and something girls, all this are storyline formed by some crud politicians in Nigeria will come out, and they do forgot about judgment day.”
Akila Luka asked: “The pregnancy should just be aborted final, if not who then is the father?”
“So sad and painful. It will be better to abort those pregnancies because the condition under which they got pregnant will continue to hunt them and there will be no love for those children. Having children for those cursed men will be a nightmare for those women!” noted Afolabi Joy.
Popoola Olugbenga Sunday added that babies will bring no joy to this world: “What joy will those babies bring to the girls family. Take away the sorrow before it’s too late.”
“I will advise to abort it because who will they say is the father to those children or can they even say how many of Boko Haram members slept with them one can stand the hatred of the pregnancy not to talk of the child and what will even become of the child if he was told the story of his existence.” advises Bolanle Folarin.
