In a move that will surprise many political watchers in the state, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has threatened to drag Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara state to court over his delay in appointing commissioners and other political office holders.
The PDP chairman, Chief Iyiola Oyedepo, opined that the non-appointment of the cabinet members is an abuse of the constitution.
Daily Trust reports that Governor Ahmed has only made few appointments, including that of the Secretary to the State Government, Chief of Staff, personal assistant and two media aides since he was re-elected for a second term in office.
Oyedepo also said the governor does not have an excuse since it his second stint in office. He said: “If it is allowed to persist, it can breed autocracy and fraudulent practices as the work to be done by many is done by one.
“That one spends all the money too. An old timer governor has no excuse not to appoint commissioners. We shall soon go to court,” he said.
In a swift reaction, the All Progressives Congress (APC) chairman in the state, Ishola Balogun-Fulani, said the PDP has no ground to take the party to court, saying appointment of commissioners is the prerogative of the governor.
He also cautioned the PDP to mind its own business while explaining that Governor Ahmed was working to select the best hands to man the ministries and agencies of government.
In the same vein, the governor’s Special Assistant on Media and Communication, Dr. Muideen Akorede, said the appointment of political office holders was still under considerations.
Meanwhile, the Kwara State government has described as false, speculative and unfounded a report that some of its workers died waiting for payment of salary arrears.
