Senators Reiterate Their Support For Saraki

As the dust raised over the election of Senate President, Bukola Saraki settles, some senators have reiterated their support for the Kwara-born senator.

Speaking to The Sun, Deputy Majority Leader Bala Ibn Na’Allah and senator representing Anambra North Senatorial zone, Uche Ekwunife yesterday dismissed reports that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) senate caucuses are still bickering over leadership positions in the upper chamber.

Na’Allah who was before his new status, a loyalist to Saraki’s opponent, Senator Ahmed Lawan, described the reports as false and attributed the issues to what he called mere “disagreement” .

He said: “I want to correct an impression that there is a faction of the APC Senators led by Senator Ahmad Lawan.  We have the Senate Unity Forum, of which I am a member. It is led by Senator Barnabas Gemade.

“No matter how unfair to Senator Gemade, he stands as one of the leaders in this country and I do not want to believe that he needs any other person to get involved in reconciling the party.

“We do not have a crisis in the Senate. What we have is disagreement within our colleagues on how certain things should be done. It is when we have crisis that we will be talking about reconciliation, but when we have a disagreement, we will sort out the matter based on what all of us believe in…

“The happy aspect of it is that there is not a single Senator in the two groups that do not believe in the yearnings and aspirations of Nigerians as they relate to the Senate and the expectations.  It will be a very easy issue to be settled provided the external influence ceases for the time being.”

On her part, Ekwunife described the struggle for leadership positions in the senate as normal in any democratic practice. She said, “I didn’t notice that some people were not happy because the chamber was very peaceful. The announcement was received with great joy on the floor of the Senate and I believe we have the best composition of the leadership.

“With Dr. Saraki as the Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu as his deputy, Ndume as the Senate Leader and Na’Allah as his deputy, I believe we are now poised to give Nigerians good representation.

“We are very proud to have the kind of people we have in the leadership of the Senate today,” she concluded.

Meanwhile, the former chairman of the APC, Chief Bisi Akande, has cautioned party members that they might lose the 2019 general elections if the bickering in the ruling party continue unabated.
