Senate To Screen New INEC Chairman

New indications have emerged that the Senate might screen the newly appointed chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Professor Mahmud Yakubu.

A source in the Senate said that the red chamber will form the committee that will decide the screening as part of the moves to save the forthcoming gubernatorial elections in Kogi and Bayelsa states from running into a logjam.

The decision to screen the INEC chairman and five national commissioners was taken because the Senate has not yet constituted the committee on the INEC.

President Muhammadu Buhari had on Thursday, October 22, sent a letter to the Senate president, Bukola Saraki on the appointment of the new INEC chairman and national commissioners.

Buhari in his letter asked for the confirmation of the appointment of Amina Bala Zakari, Dr. Anthonia Taiye Okoosi, Baba Shettima Arfo, Mohammed Mustapha Lecky and Soyebi Adedeji Solomon.

The source concluded by saying that the confirmation will be given speedy consideration.

Meanwhile, the Ekiti state governor, Ayo Fayose had given his views on the recent verdict of the Akwa Ibom and Rivers states election petition tribunals.

Fayose condemned the judgement of the tribunals alleging that the seeming collaboration between the All Progressives Congress-led federal government and a section of the judiciary is worrisome and portends grave danger to the corporate existence of Nigeria.
