President Buhari is well-known for his anti-corruption stance and is once again ready to clamp down on corrupt public office holders, whether past or present. This position is what has prompted former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke to offer to return a huge sum of money back to the country’s account.
According to reports, she has offered to return the sum of 250 million dollars in exchange for immunity from further investigation and subsequent prosecution. This gesture, however, has reportedly been turned down by the President.
The past administration has been accused of gross corrupt practices and Madueke has been identified as one of culprits who have orchestrated numerous money-laundering scandals and deals. In addition, she was also said to have been in possession of a huge sum of money in her home while she oversaw the direct looting of funds through the NNPC. She has been reportedly running helter skelter to find herself in the good books of the present administration. According to sources, Mrs. Alison-Madueke had solicited the support of several important figures close to the President, including Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State, to speak on her behalf.
It is reported that this move by Mrs. Alison-Madueke to refund the government of funds embezzled came after news of Buhari’s scheduled meeting with US Attorney General, Loretta Lynch, was made open. One of the topics supposedly discussed include ways that the US government in concert with the Nigerian government would facilitate the investigation, arrest and prosecution of corrupt officials and recoup some of the funds stolen from the national treasury.
