A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress in Lagos State, Chief Ayo Akande, on Thursday described the November 16 governorship poll in Anambra State as “the most disgraceful outing” for the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Atahiru Jega.
Akande said Jega had never performed so badly since he assumed the leadership of the electoral commission, adding that the shoddy poll conducted in Anambra could be a signal to what is expected in 2015.
“The INEC chairman has never had it so bad. The shoddy Anambra election was Jega’s poorest performance. It was a disgraceful outing and it has created doubts in the minds of many on the capability of INEC to conduct the 2015 elections in a manner that will be free and fair and acceptable to all,” he said in a statement.
A supplementary election in Anambra has been scheduled to hold on Saturday (tomorrow) to correct the shortcomings of the November exercise, and the APC chieftain said his party would not tolerate rigging.
He charged Nigerians to brace up to defend their votes always, especially “in 2015 when the Peoples Democratic Party would want to rig the presidential election at all cost in order to perpetuate itself in power at the expense of Nigerians”.
He said what happened in Anambra signified an imminent danger to the continued existence of the country and that INEC should ensure free and fair elections as a way of keeping the nation together.
He said, “The only thing remaining that could bind Nigeria together is a free and fair election. Prof. Attahiru Jega should not toy with the future of Nigerians; no amount is too much for him to repeat the Anambra election in order to be credible.
“His integrity is at stake, more so that he admitted there were obvious errors and lapses. He should have the courage to avert the looming danger as a result of election irregularities.”
