After Tottenham sold Gareth Bale for £85.3million, Andre Villas-Boas set to work spending the equivalent on attacking and defensive midfielders from around the globe who would be able to carve open opposing sides.
No side have put more goals past Tottenham than Manchester United and they have only scored more goals (84) and won more matches (30) against Everton. |
The likes of Paulinho, Nacer Chadli, Christian Eriksen and Erik Lamela were added to Andros Townsend, Aaron Lennon, Mousa Dembele and Sandro. Between them they have created the most chances in the Premier League this season. Job done. Well, not quite.
Villas-Boas forgot one crucial thing. It’s essential to have someone who can actually put those chances in the back of the net. Tottenham just can’t put away their chances this season.
They have the WORST shot conversion rate in the entire Premier League, only scoring 5.36 per cent of shots they’ve had – just one in 20.
Villas-Boas has persisted with £26m signing Roberto Soldado who got off to a flyer with four goals in his opening three games but has now only netted six in total – half of those have been penalties – and just two in his last 11 appearances.
Meanwhile England striker Jermain Defoe could barely have done more with the opportunities he has had. Defoe has netted nine times this season in 15 Spurs games - all in cup competitions.
But he’s had enough of being overlooked by the Portuguese and is off to Toronto.
Youngster Harry Kane has scored once, but is only on the periphery of the first team, and that leaves Emmanuel Adebayor, who has managed just one substitute appearance this season, in Tottenham’s 6-0 hiding by Manchester City on Sunday.
But the lack of goals is not for want of trying. Tottenham have created 164 goal-scoring chances this season, ahead of City who have carved out 161 and the next most Chelsea, who have made 149.
Excluding penalties they have failed to score with ANY of their last 78 shots in the league.
It’s unlikely to get better this weekend, too. Look away now AVB: Spurs have a diabolical record against Manchester United who they face on Sunday.
They have won less than 10 per cent of the Premier League matches they’ve played against them and conceded almost two goals per game.
No side have put more goals past Tottenham than Manchester United and they have only scored more goals (84) and won more matches (30) against Everton.
And Spurs fans should not get their hopes up about ending that goal-shortage – they have scored less than a goal a game against the league champions.
