Adams Ashanaogun of Age; 20-year-old, has been remanded in prison by an Ebute Meta Magistrate’s Court for allegedly killing one Ahmed Mufutau, 18, by hitting him with stick on the head.

The incident was said to have happened at Ogunmodede Senior College, Epe area of Lagos.

The investigating police officer, Corporal Opara Oliver, told the court that the defendant had gone to the school to visit his younger brother when he had a fight with the deceased.

He said, “The defendant went to the school in November 28, 2013. He said he went there to visit his younger brother who was a student of the school.

“On the way, he met the deceased who said he was an ex-student of the school and queried him on his mission within the school premises.

“This led to a fight between them. Then Ashanaogun went to pick a stick, with which he hit Mufutau on the head.

“He was rushed to the hospital, where he died.”

Oliver, however, said the defendant did not confess to the crime after he was arrested.

The police prosecutor, Inspector George Nwosu, applied for the remand of the defendant pursuant to Section 264 of the Administration of Criminal Justice, Lagos State, 2011.

The defence counsel, Isa Ibrahim, however urged the court to grant the defendant bail.

The magistrate, Tunbosun Abolarinwa, objected to the bail request.

He said, “What is before this court is a murder charge, which can only be handled by the DPP. Let us wait for the autopsy, to know if he hit him with the stick or not.

“This honourable court is satisfied that the police have shown probable cause why the defendant should be remanded in prison custody. He is therefore ordered to be kept in prison pending legal advice.”

The matter was adjourned till January 30, 2014 for DPP’s advice.
