Govt Shutdown: Mu’azu, Govs, PDP Reps In Crucial Meeting To Block APC

Chat212 - Mail News... Report Rivers State Crisis

Apparently rattled by the threat by All Progressives Congress in the National Assembly to block all government legislations until the Rivers State crisis was resolved, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, yesterday, summoned its caucus members in the House of Representatives to an emergency meeting.

We gathered that the meeting which is being called by the leadership of the party is to be presided over by the newly-appointed National Chairman of the Party, Alhaji Ahmed Adamu Mu’azu with the 18 PDP governors in attendance.

The meeting, which is slated for today at 8pm in 2.31 in the New Building, has been described by the House Leader, Adeola Akande, as ‘very crucial’.

Although the agenda of the meeting, which is being convened by the House Leader, Mulikat Adeola Akande, was not disclosed, it would be used to solicit the continued support and cooperation of the members to the party and President Goodluck Jonathan’s alleged bid for a second term.

It was gathered that Mu’azu would use the opportunity, the first since his appointment, to assure the members of automatic tickets provided they did not defect to the opposition APC.

It was also learnt that the meeting was called to fine-tune ways of neutralising the increasing influence of the APC and to stall the bid by the opposition to change the leadership of the House of Representatives.

The notice of meeting, which Vanguard sighted last night read: “PDP Caucus-All members of the above caucus are cordially invited to a meeting with the National Chairman and PDP governors on Tuesday, January 28, 2014 at 8pm in Room 2.31 at the New Building. Attendance is crucial,” the notice signed by the House Leader, said.

It will be recalled that the Presidency and the leadership of the PDP have been worried over the directive by the APC to its NASS members to block all legislations coming before them until the Federal Government resolved the Rivers crisis.

But the Presidency on Sunday dared the APC to carry out its threat and face its wrath as it was ready to mobilise the law enforcement agencies to go after those trying to cause confusion in the land.

Many well-placed Nigerians have also cautioned the APC over its threat, saying that it is capable of heating up the polity and precipitating unnecessary tension ahead of next year’s election, whose timetable has already been released by INEC.

But the spokesman for the APC, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, sounded defiant on Monday, saying that the party’s directive to its members had started yielding results.
