The Seme Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service has generated N2.1bn for the first quarter of 2014.
A statement by the command’s Public relations Officer, Mr. Ernest Olottah, said the amount
surpassed the N1.89bn which was generated within the same period in 2013.
The statement read in part, “The command within the same period also made 252 seizures with duty paid value of N141m and handed over seized narcotics and artifacts to the relevant government agencies.
“Most of the revenue generated was collected from duty payments on imported motor vehicles.
“The Customs Area Controller of the command, Willy Egbudin, had last year emphasised on the need to ensure that no area of revenue leakage is tolerated in the command. He had warned against anyone attempting to undermine his resolve through under declaration, concealment and outright smuggling to evade duty payment.”
The statement explained that the seizures included motor vehicles, rice, frozen poultry products, vegetable oil, bales of secondhand clothing, narcotics and cartons of soap. The seized narcotics were said to have been handed over to operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency for investigation and possible prosecution of suspects.
Within same period, the command reportedly handed over seized artifacts worth $16,870 to the National Council for Museums and Monuments.
