The leader of the terrorist Boko Haram sect, Abubakar Shekau has reportedly demanded an exchange of the Chibok girls for members of his group in custody of Nigeria’s security agencies.
In a new video released by Islamist militants, released on Monday, about 100 girls believed to be some of the 234 school girls, kidnapped in Chibok, Borno State, on April 14, were seen reciting the Koran.
According to BBC, Shekau, disclosed that the girls had been converted to Islam, and would be held until all imprisoned militants had been freed.
In the 17-minute video, obtained by French news agency AFP, three of the girls are shown speaking while all the girls are wearing the full-length hijab.
Two girls say they were Christian and have converted to Islam, while the other says she is Muslim.
The girls reportedly appeared calm and one said that they had not been harmed.
There has been a demand for the identity of the missing girls, while some doubted the veracity of the abduction.
However, the emergence of video showing the girls may help towards identifying some of the missing girls, as the Nigerian military continues its mission to rescue the girls.
Some of the abducted girls from the Government Girls Secondary School in Chibok, Borno State, who escaped from the clutches of their abductors, recently recounted their experience.
Some parents who attended a protest organised by the bring back our girls campaign in Abuja on Friday appealed to all Nigerians to unite in the fight against the Islamic sect, Boko Haram, for peace and stability to return to the country.
The Nigerian government had asked for the assistance of the international community in the rescue of the girls.
The US government, UK and France say they will render support to the Nigerian government to rescue the girls as soon as possible.
