FG releases N2.7bn to Michael Okpara varsity

►FEDERAL Government has released N2.7 billion to Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State, as part of the university’s NEEDS assessment requirement to upgrade the university’s programmes.

Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Hilary Edoga, who announced this yesterday at a briefing ahead of the university’s 6th convocation, said the total amount for the institution’s NEEDS assessment was N5.4 billion, of which half had been released.

Edoga, who said over 2000 graduates would take part in the 6th convocation, the N2.7 billion so far released was being invested to provide and improve facilities in the university.

He said the facilities were being provided to ensure that the university became “part of the global community”, noting “that is why we take time to upgrade our facilities and academics and prepare grounds to produce students who will reason like leaders of tomorrow”.

Among the projects being executed with the released NEEDS funds included six hostel blocks to add the existing 10, saying he would like to see about 20,000 students of the university reside on campus.

Edoga also announced the procurement of 300 electronic interactive billboards for teaching as against the use of black boards.

He equally announced that the university had begun preparation towards the teaching of medicine and law, saying the institution had sent formal request on the proposed courses to the National Universities Commission, NUC.
