Misapplication of N19.2bn: Reps say Ministry of Works has case to answer

THE House of Representatives Committee on Anti-Corruption, Ethics and Values has invited the Ministry of Works over alleged misapplication of N19.2 billion released for various road projects across the country.

►It was reliably gathered that the committee invited the ministry two weeks ago, with no response received from the officials till date.

According to a source close to the committee, several petitions were sent alleging that funds allocated to the ministry almost two years ago were deliberately misapplied.

Documents made available to Chat212 clearly indicated that N18.2bn was allocated to the ministry in the first quarter of 2013.

Subsequently, another N1, 055, 447,608.16 was allocated to the ministry to quickly put finishing touches to the various projects across Nigeria.

A breakdown of the projects and  allocations indicated N4 billion for Lagos-Shagamu Road; Enugu-PortHarcourt expressway-N4.5bn; Ilorin-Mokwa-Tigina-Gwari-Kaduna expressway-N4bn; Suleja-Minna road-N2bn; Abuja-Lokoja Road-N1.7bn; and Apapa-Oshodi expressway Phase, 11-N2bn.

The total amount released amounted to N18.2 billion and the information to this effect was contained in a circular dated January 2, 2013, with Ref No:FD/FA/14/VOLXV/285.

Also, the sum of N1, 055, 447,608.16 was allocated to the ministry to enable it properly renovate and refurbish the roads.

Details of payment are as follows: Ref/FD/FA/114/Vol.XIV/DF. Release from 1.46 per cent FGN Share of Derivation and Ecology Fund, Transfer Sum – N1, 055, 44,608.16 to Federal Ministry of Works account No. 0059752524, CBN account No. 0020054141317

The above transfer represents amount approved by the President for the reinstatement of the collapsed section of Gombe – Potiskum road vide letter Ref No. PRES/81/ SGF/ 2/679/738/MW/74 of September 13, 2012, and CME/HMF’s approval on memo dated October 21, 2012.
