Speaking in Owerri yesterday, Chairman of IBC Pensioners, Chidi Madu, lamented that “the state government appears not to appreciate the service we rendered selflessly and patriotically during our youthful years.
“This time last year, it was a hopeless situation for IBC pensioners,” adding that many pensioners died without collecting their entitlements.
“It was the collective efforts of our members and some committed and friendly media practitioners that we were able to draw the attention of the government to our plight,” Madu said.
While acknowledging the role of the media in their struggle, Madu also admitted that the former commissioner for Information, Dr. Theodore Ekechi, helped in presenting their case to Governor Okorocha.
The former Director of Administration, Sir Ambrose Mbagwu, commended “the doggedness of Chidi Madu,” adding that “he was fearless even when there were obstacles. He persevered through it all.”
Speaking also, Ohakim Boniface Anukam urged the state government to step up the payment of the lingering arrears of pensions, stressing that it was their only source of livelihood.
In her speech, the former Assistant Director of Programme, Chinwe Kalu, said by the action of the government, it had brought more liveliness to them, stressing that their efforts years back had started yielding results.
