New report confirms Samsung is making an absolutely crazy version of the Galaxy S6

Samsung is doubling down on its edgy smartphones. SamMobile’s sources have confirmed earlier reports that Samsung plans to release a special version of the Galaxy S6 that will feature not one, but two displays on the side of the device similar to what we first saw this past fall with the Galaxy Note Edge.

In addition to confirming the device’s existence, SamMobile also delivers some more details about what it will feature.

“The S6 Edge will run the same panel-based system that the Korean giant designed for the Galaxy Note Edge,” SamMobile writes. “So, it will have all the panels from the Note Edge including Yahoo! Finance, news and sport panels, briefing panel, pedometer panel (powered by S Health), favourite apps and contacts panels, and more will be downloadable from Samsung’s app store. Furthermore, it will also sport features like Night Clock and Express Me.”

We first started hearing rumors about a Galaxy S6 Edge late last year when IHD Technology senior analyst Jerry Kang first reported that Samsung’s display business was preparing to make a display that was capable of wrapping around both sides of the device.

Samsung’s Galaxy S6 will have some crazy new features...

More and more reports are detailing Samsung’s next flagship handset, the Galaxy S6 “Project Zero” that’s supposed to launch next year, with Samsung said to be creating the handset from scratch rather than simply improving on previous Galaxy S models. While the Galaxy S6 is far from becoming official, The Korea Herald notes new speculation that Samsung might be planning a bold new design for the Galaxy S6, even more interesting than the Galaxy Note Edge curved handset — that is, if you like having special displays on the phone’s edges.

According to an analyst, Samsung’s Galaxy S6 will have two screens on the edges, not just one. “The Galaxy S6 to be released next year will feature a ‘dual-edged’ screen which is curved on the right and left sides,” IHD Technology senior analyst Jerry Kang said.

“The dual edge is expected to be beneficial for Samsung Display, the main display supplier for the smartphone-maker, as larger displays bring more profit,” he said.

Kang further added that the Galaxy Note Edge should have had a dual-edged screen as well, but the company dumped this idea “at the last-minute,” even though it was aware of possible complaints resulting from the phone’s edge display being featured only on one side of the handset.

Samsung has already toyed with such smartphone display ideas in the past, but they remained only interesting prototypes for many years. The company came out with the Galaxy Round last year, with the Galaxy Note Edge being the second Samsung handset to feature a curved display.

It’s not clear whether the company can mass-produce smartphones with curved displays to meet potentially high demand, which could be the case for the Galaxy S6, assuming Kang’s report is accurate. Furthermore, it’s not clear whether Samsung will also have a “regular” Galaxy S6 model in stores alongside the “dual-edged” model.
