Police avert PDP, APC supporters’ clash in Edo

The police in Ekpoma, Edo State, has averted what could have resulted in a bloody clash between supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP and the All Progressives Congress, APC, after they allegedly saw over 500 Permanent Voter Cards at the residence of a suspected PDP stalwart.
The drama started when the PDP stalwart (name withheld) was apprehended in one of the new generation banks in Ekpoma, while attempting to use somebody else’s ATM card to withdraw money. Customers at the bank alerted security operatives in the bank who handed the suspect over to the police.

The police took him to his house to search the place and when they got there, 500 voter’s cards were found in his room. He was said to have confessed to the police that the cards belonged to a politician in the state.

When the news went round the streets of Ekpoma, APC and PDP supporters ran towards the suspect’s residence. While the APC was said to be demanding that the suspect be transferred immediately to the state Police Command in Benin City, the PDP members allegedly insisted that the suspect be left alone.

The atmosphere became charged until policemen and officers of the Department of State Security, DSS, took the suspect away while the police dispersed the rival party supporters, who were almost engaging in a free for all.

Spokesman of Edo State Police Command, Joseph Edoigiawerie, when contacted, said the command was yet to be briefed by the Divisional Police Officer, DPO, in Ekpoma.
