Gunmen Kidnap Cross River Ex- Deputy Speaker

Report just reaching us from Calabar, Cross River State reveals that Gunmen have kidnapped the former deputy Speaker of the state’s House of Assembly.

Hon. Dominic Edem, who is also the Labour Party House of Representatives candidate in the State was said to have been abducted at his residence in Calabar at about 8pm on Sunday night.

The victim’s aide who spoke on condition of anonymity said the gunmen fired several gun shots to scare people before taking him away.

Edem’s aide, who spoke with Leadership correspondent said: “he (Edem) went to a church service and as he was coming back they followed him with an Audi car. About five boys came out of the car and started shooting inside his compound and the next thing; they dragged him out and put him inside their car because he was not with any security man. Up till now we have not heard from them. The incident happened around 8-9pm in the night.”

Efforts to reach the state’s police command spokesman, ASP Bassey Hogan for confirmation proved abortive as calls made to his mobile phone were not connecting.

Edem, who is a former board member of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), is seeking to represent the people of Bakassi/Akpabuyo/Calabar South Federal Constituency in the national assembly.

Recall that one police officer died in a gun fight the ensued when gunmen abducted three Chinese nationals in Kogi State.

Meanwhile, Rev. Phyllis Sortor, the kidnapped American woman Missionary, has been rescued following a combined effort by a team of police, military and SSS.
