Several Injured In OPC Faction Clash In Lagos

Report coming in from Surulere area of Lagos State indicates that several people have been left with various degrees of injuries following a clash that occurred between factions of the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC).
Daily Trust reports that the incident which occurred on Wednesday saw members of the congress freely engaged in a gun battle that lasted for hours.

The reason for the dispute could not be ascertained as at the time of filing the report, but a source who spoke on condition of anonymity said it might not been unconnected with rallies organized by members of various political parties in the city.

It was gathered that some of the armed hoodlums took to the street in a free for all and started dispossessing and robbing innocent members of the public of their belongings.

Some of the warring members reportedly smashed windscreens of vehicles that were stuck in traffic.

“They vandalized vehicles while others snatched bags and mobile phone sets as they moved from one area to the other. At the National Stadium, they engaged in a free for all, using bottles and clubs as weapons,” a witness said.

When the state’s police spokesman, Kenneth Nwosu, was contacted, he trivialised the incident saying: “it was a minor incident involving political thugs.”

The force spokesman said anti-riot police officers were quickly dispatched to quell the crisis before it degenerated to other areas.

“It is not an issue to worry about, normalcy has returned the area. The police are capable of curtailing any violence in the state,” Nwosu said.

OPC and the Goodluck Jonathan Campaign Organisation Lagos chapter recently took to the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, demanding the removal of the Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega, before the March 28 elections.

Just recently, several sources claimed that hoodlums and robbers representing the People’s Democratic Party PDP, invaded Ojuelegba area of the state up to the National Stadium, Surulere, vandalizing cars with guns and stealing.
